The Kraków Shooting Society — Bractwo Kurkowe — traces its documented origins to 1257, making it one of the oldest continuously active civic organizations in Poland. Medieval shooting brotherhoods of this type were not ceremonial clubs but genuine municipal defense auxiliaries, responsible for training burghers in marksmanship and maintaining the city's readiness against siege. Kraków's chapter survived partitions, occupations, and two world wars, reconstituting itself after each suppression.
The selective gilding on this issue targets the rooster figure, the brotherhood's emblematic prize awarded annually to the member who shoots it down from a pole — a ritual competition unchanged in its basic form for centuries.
