Additional information

Warsaw's 700th anniversary fell in 1965, and the Polish government used the occasion for a sustained commemorative program spanning multiple denominations and materials. The city's founding date — traditionally fixed at 1265, though historians debate whether this reflects the establishment of a Mazovian duke's settlement or something earlier — was politically convenient for a Communist-era state eager to anchor national identity in medieval continuity rather than more recent, complicated history. The 10-złoty copper-nickel pieces circulated widely and were not treated as collectibles by the general public, which kept mint state survivors relatively scarce despite substantial mintage figures.
