The Independent Students' Union — Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studentów — was founded in September 1980 in the immediate wake of the Solidarity agreements at Gdańsk, making it one of the first independent organizations to emerge from that summer's strikes. It was formally registered in February 1981 after months of bureaucratic resistance from Communist authorities, who recognized exactly what an organized, non-Party student body represented. Martial law in December 1981 drove it underground within months of full legal recognition.
The NBP's commemorative program for Solidarity-era anniversaries accelerated sharply around 2010–2011, coinciding with the broader thirtieth-anniversary cycle of the 1980 agreements.
