This note belongs to the first series issued under the communist-backed Polish Committee of National Liberation (PKWN), printed in the Soviet Union in 1944 as the Red Army advanced westward through Polish territory. The printing was arranged in Moscow rather than London, a deliberate political statement against the Polish government-in-exile, whose own currency series had been prepared in Britain. Two competing currencies, two competing claims to legitimate Polish statehood — this 10 Zlotych was part of that fight.
Soviet-printed examples from this series are known for uneven ink distribution and inconsistent sheet registration.
