Poland's monetary system was being constructed from scratch in 1919 — the country had only re-emerged as a sovereign state in November 1918 after 123 years of partition. Bank Polski contracted the Banque de France for this series at a moment when Poland had no domestic printing capacity capable of producing secure currency, and French security printing was among the most trusted in the world.
Adolphe Giraldon was a well-regarded medallist and decorative artist whose work appeared on multiple French-printed issues for newly reconstituted European states after Versailles. The engraving team — Deloche and Clément on the obverse, Gaspérini on the reverse — were Banque de France staff engravers, not freelancers, which accounts for the characteristically tight intaglio line work typical of Paris-produced notes from this period.
