Additional information

Issued in the year marking the centenary of Soong Ching-ling's birth, this coin commemorates a figure whose political trajectory was genuinely unusual — the widow of Sun Yat-sen, she rejected the Nationalist government her brother-in-law Chiang Kai-shek led and aligned openly with the Communist Party decades before 1949. She was granted honorary PRC presidency shortly before her death in 1981, the only person to hold that title.
