Additional information

Issued to mark the handover of Hong Kong from British administration on July 1, 1997, after 156 years of colonial rule stemming from the cession following the First Opium War. The People's Bank produced commemorative silver issues in substantial quantities for this event, and the 1997 handover series was one of the most aggressively marketed Chinese commemorative programs of the decade — sold through international dealers and marketed heavily to the overseas Chinese diaspora.

Surviving examples are plentiful. Secondary market premiums depend almost entirely on packaging integrity rather than coin condition.
