| Obverse description | Central field features a detailed frontal view of the Mazu Temple complex, rendered in fine relief with multiple pavilions, tiered pagoda rooftops, and a broad ceremonial stairway leading to the main hall. Flanking garden elements with ornamental rockery and foliage are visible to either side of the staircase. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The date 1997 appears in the lower exergue. |

Mazu worship traces to a tenth-century Song dynasty figure named Lin Mo, a Fujian coastal woman credited with protecting fishermen from storms. By 1997, the cult had an estimated 200 million devotees across Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the Chinese diaspora — making the choice of subject unmistakably political, issued just months before the Hong Kong handover as Beijing actively courted overseas Chinese communities.
