| Reverse description | The reverse presents a richly detailed colorized composition commemorating the 40th anniversary of China's polar scientific expeditions. In the foreground, two scientists in cold-weather gear are depicted drilling into polar ice using a manual ice-core drill. Behind them, the Chinese icebreaker Xuelong 2 (雪龙2) and a second research vessel bearing the inscription CHINARE are shown navigating icy waters. To the left, a polar map with navigational lines occupies the mid-ground, while the upper right field is enlivened with a vivid colorized depiction of the aurora borealis in deep blues and purples. The curved legend 中国极地科学考察40周年 (40th Anniversary of China's Polar Scientific Expedition) arcs along the upper border in Chinese characters, and the denomination 10元 appears in the lower left field. |

China's polar research program dates to 1984, when the first Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition departed aboard a borrowed Argentine vessel. The country has since established multiple permanent stations on both the Antarctic and Arctic, and this series of commemorative issues — issued periodically since the early 2000s — tracks that expansion. The 2024 release coincides with ongoing operations at Qinling Station, China's fifth Antarctic outpost, which opened in February 2024 and represents the most substantial Chinese polar infrastructure investment to date.
