The Zhuhai Airshow, formally the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exposition, held its second edition in 1998 and was still establishing itself as a vehicle for demonstrating the PRC's domestic aerospace ambitions to foreign buyers and partners. The show had only launched in 1996, and Beijing was keen to use it — and coins like this one — as soft-power instruments signaling technological credibility during a period of aggressive military modernization.
