Obverse description At center, a highly detailed ornamental huabiao column — the traditional Chinese ceremonial pillar — rises prominently from a bed of blooming peony flowers, flanked by radiating sunbeams that fill the field. A small sculptural figure surmounts the column's capital, rendered in fine relief. The Chinese legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed around the upper periphery in Chinese characters. The date 1997 appears in the lower exergue in Western numerals.

Reverse description A chubby child deity rendered in high relief cradles a large, finely detailed koi carp in the foreground, symbolizing abundance and good fortune. The Chinese inscription 年年有庆 (Nián Nián Yǒu Qìng — Celebration Year After Year) curves along the upper left field. The denomination 10元 is inscribed in bold numerals at the lower center of the field.
