Issued to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the PLA's founding, dated to the Nanchang Uprising of August 1, 1927 — an event the Communist Party treats as the birth of its armed forces, though the uprising itself was suppressed within days and the survivors scattered. The date stuck anyway, and August 1st remains PLA Day to this day.
Circulation commemoratives of this type were produced in very large numbers for the domestic market and saw genuine everyday use, making uncirculated survivors more relevant to collectors than the mintage figures alone suggest.
