China's aviation industry traces its formal founding to 1951, when the People's Liberation Army Air Force established the first state aircraft manufacturing infrastructure under Soviet technical guidance. The relationship with Soviet advisors collapsed abruptly in 1960, forcing Chinese engineers to reverse-engineer and independently develop airframes they had only partially learned to build — a rupture that defined the industry's character for decades.
This commemorative marks the 60th anniversary of that 1951 founding date.
