| Obverse description | At center, the national emblem of the People's Republic of China — Tiananmen Gate surmounted by five stars within a circular wreath of ears of grain bound with a ribbon — rendered in high relief against a mirror-like field. The dates 1949 and 1989 are inscribed in the lower field to either side of the emblem, commemorating the 40-year span. A decorative frieze of peony blossoms in full bloom occupies the lower portion of the coin. The encircling legend reads 中华人民共和国成立四十周年 (40th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China) in Chinese characters along the upper periphery. |
