| Obverse description | Central device depicts the Wanghai Tower (望海楼), a multi-tiered traditional Chinese pavilion rendered in fine relief against a mirror-polished field, surrounded by decorative rockwork and foliage. The legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs around the upper periphery in Chinese characters. To the lower left of the tower the inscription 望海楼 identifies the building, while a small ancient coin motif appears to the right.
