Additional information

The Bank of Communications, founded in 1908 under the Qing dynasty, was one of the first modern joint-stock banks in China and held note-issuing authority alongside the Hu Pu Bank. It survived the Republican revolution, Japanese occupation, and the Communist takeover — though it was effectively wound down as a commercial institution after 1949, operating in a vastly diminished capacity until its full rehabilitation as a state commercial bank in 1987.

The 2008 centennial issue was part of a broader commemorative program timed to coincide with Beijing's Olympic year, sharing shelf space with dozens of other releases that flooded the collector market simultaneously.
