The Bank of China was founded in 1912 as the successor to the Qing dynasty's Da-Qing Bank, initially tasked with managing national currency issuance and foreign exchange — functions it lost and regained several times over the following decades as political control of China shifted between the Republic, the warlord era, and eventually the Communist government after 1949. The institution survived where many of its contemporaries did not, partly by maintaining branches in Hong Kong and Macau that continued operations through periods when the mainland network was severely disrupted.
This commemorative was issued in a mintage of 80,000 pieces across the Shanghai and Shenyang mints.
