Reverse description A bold cross of Saint Thomas (Cruz de São Tomé) with trefoil terminals at each arm, displayed prominently in the center of the field. The date is divided and placed in the quadrants formed by the arms of the cross, reading 17-55. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. The cross is deeply struck and rendered in a plain, unadorned style consistent with Portuguese colonial gold coinage of the reign of José I.
