Vanuatu's monetary authority has periodically issued small-denomination gold pieces aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation — this being among the lightest in that series. The Pompeii theme connects to no particular national or historical relationship between Vanuatu and the Roman site; these issues are frankly commercial products, struck to a 14-karat standard that keeps production costs low while retaining the word "gold" on the label.
