Resplendor is a small municipality in the Doce River valley of Minas Gerais, and the "Ubérrimas" is a social currency — a moeda social — issued under the Brazilian complementary currency movement that gained momentum after federal legislation in 2013 opened regulatory space for community banks to formalize such instruments. The name derives from the Latin superlative of "uber," meaning extraordinarily fertile or abundant, an oblique reference to the region's agricultural character and the Doce valley's pre-2015 identity.

The Doce River disaster — the Samarco tailings dam collapse in November 2015 — devastated Resplendor economically and ecologically. Whether this currency is a direct response to that ongoing recovery is not something the catalog data confirms, but the timing of formalization and the choice of name are not incidental.
