| Additional information |
This piece belongs to the wave of Samoan commemorative issues produced in the early 2000s that marked the retirement of European currencies displaced by the euro. The Spanish peseta ceased legal tender status on 28 February 2002, ending a monetary unit that had existed in various forms since 1868. Tanumafili II, who held the position of O le Ao o le Malo from Samoan independence in 1962 until his death in 2007, was the last surviving head of state to have been appointed rather than elected to a life term under a constitutional framework.
