Issued to mark Benedict XVI's election to the papacy in April 2005, this small-format gold piece appeared during a period when Samoa — a predominantly Christian nation — maintained strong symbolic ties to the Catholic Church despite a relatively small Catholic population. Benedict's pontificate was already controversial within months of his election, partly due to his role as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under John Paul II. Tālā-denominated gold issues from this era were produced almost exclusively for the collector market; none reached general circulation.
