The shield is encircled by a globe and flanked by two laurel branches tied at the base with a ribbon scroll bearing the national motto FA'AVAE I LE ATUA SAMOA. Reverse description The reverse presents a finely detailed neoclassical scene depicting the French explorer Jean-François de Galaup, Comte de La Pérouse (1741–1788), shown standing in naval uniform at left, consulting a terrestrial globe alongside a seated figure representing King Louis XVI of France at right. Draped curtains flank both figures, and a full-rigged sailing ship is rendered in the upper field above a stylized sea horizon. The date 1994 appears to the right of the ship, while the birth and death years 1741-1788 are inscribed in the lower central field. The legend COMTE DE LA PÉROUSE curves along the lower border.
