Amsterdam began issuing its own silver coinage in 1578, the same year the city underwent the Alteratie — its abrupt shift from Spanish Catholic allegiance to the side of the Dutch Revolt. The municipal authority that suddenly controlled the city needed hard currency quickly, and these 10 stuiver pieces were among the first products of that new political reality.
The "with reverse" designation distinguishes this from companion pieces struck without a proper reverse die — a known production irregularity in this early Amsterdam series documented across the Gelder and Delmonte references.
