Amsterdam struck these emergency silver pieces in 1578 under direct pressure from the early stages of the Revolt against Spain, when regular coin supply from the southern mints had become unreliable and the city needed hard currency to pay its garrison. The "small arms" designation refers to the city's lesser heraldic arms used on the type, distinguishing it from contemporaneous Amsterdam issues carrying the full civic arms — a distinction that matters considerably for attribution and was the source of long-running cataloging disagreements reflected in the divergent reference numbers across Gelder, Delmonte, and Maillet.
