Balkantourist was the Bulgarian state tourism monopoly, and these small-denomination coupons were issued specifically for use by foreign visitors in designated hard-currency shops and facilities — insulating those transactions from the regular lev economy. The 10 stotinki value is the lowest in the 1966 Balkantourist series, intended for small purchases and change-making within the coupon system.
Printed locally in Sofia, which was unusual for Eastern Bloc tourist scrip — many comparable issues from neighbouring countries went to Western printers to discourage counterfeiting. Bulgarian state printing facilities handled this one entirely in-house.
