Additional information

Miguel Grau Seminario, the Peruvian admiral commemorated here, died aboard the monitor Huáscar at the Battle of Angamos in October 1879 — the engagement in which Chilean forces finally captured the vessel after months of failed attempts. Peru issued this piece in the early 1980s during a period of severe economic deterioration; inflation would exceed 7,000% before the decade closed, rendering denominations like this one effectively worthless within years of striking.
