Obverse description Central device consists of a quartered heraldic shield bearing the arms of the Duchy of Massa-Carrara, surmounted by an imperial double-headed eagle displayed and topped by an archducal crown with a cross finial. The shield is flanked by ornamental laurel branches and rests on a decorative base. A beaded inner border frames the design. The circular legend in Latin reads MAR • BEATRIX • ARCHID • AUSTRIAE •, identifying the ruler Maria Beatrice d'Este as Archduchess of Austria.
