| Additional information |
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state, which means its coinage — issued by the Bank of Somaliland — circulates domestically without the international legitimacy that typically underwrites a currency. The zodiac shilling series, of which this is a part, was produced primarily for the collector market rather than everyday commerce.
The "empty leaves" designation distinguishes this from a variant with filled leaf detail in the reverse design — a minor die difference that has generated enough collector interest to warrant separate catalog listings.
