Somaliland's zodiac shilling series, issued from the early 2000s onward, was produced for a territory that declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never received formal recognition from any United Nations member state. The coins circulate domestically as genuine currency despite having no legal standing internationally — an unusual position that makes the issuing authority itself a subject of collector interest beyond the coins' face value.
KM#53 is distinguished from the plain-leaf variety by the fully detailed leaf rendering on the reverse flora, a die difference significant enough to warrant a separate catalog number.
