| Additional information |
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the Siad Barre regime, but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state. The Bank of Somaliland nonetheless issues its own currency — the Somaliland shilling — as a functional assertion of administrative autonomy, circulating domestically without international monetary recognition. KM#13 is part of the zodiac-themed shilling series, an unusual choice for a predominantly Muslim territory.
