| Obverse description | Crowned and armoured bust of James VI facing left, depicted as a young sovereign wearing a closed crown with cross finial, elaborate ruffled collar, and richly decorated plate armour with floral motifs on the pauldron. The king holds a sword upright before him in his right hand. The effigy is rendered in a bold, somewhat naive hammered style characteristic of late 16th-century Scottish coinage. The legend encircles the bust within a beaded inner border. |
