The Irish Hospitals' Sweepstake was one of the most commercially sophisticated lottery operations of the twentieth century, legally exported to countries — including the United States and Canada — where lotteries were outright illegal. Tickets were smuggled in by mail and hand-carried across borders in volumes that embarrassed governments on both sides of the Atlantic. This 10 Shilling ticket dates from the late 1930s, when the Sweep was at peak international reach, drawing on major horse races including the Grand National and the Derby as prize triggers.
Three Dublin printers shared production: Dollard, Hely's, and Alex Thom. The watermark is the primary security feature against counterfeiting — a real concern given the volume of counterfeit Sweep tickets that circulated, particularly in North America.
