Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never received international recognition as a sovereign state, which makes the Bank of Somaliland's coinage an unusual case — legally ambiguous tender issued by an institution with no standing in international monetary frameworks. The 2006 series, of which this is a part, introduced zodiac-themed reverses, an uncommon choice for a Horn of Africa issuer and one almost certainly aimed at export and collector markets rather than domestic circulation.
