Tanzania's first banknote series, issued after the break from the East African Currency Board, required the newly established Bank of Tanzania to commission an entirely new set of notes following independence in 1964. Thomas De La Rue supplied the full series, as they had for much of Britain's departing colonial currency infrastructure across East Africa — a continuity of contractor even as political ties were severed.
The P#2 ran across a notably long issue window, with serial letter and signature varieties distinguishing earlier printings from later ones. Collectors targeting the full signature set should verify the signatory combination carefully, as values diverge considerably between them.
