Ghana's first banknote series, issued from independence in 1958, replaced the West African Currency Board notes that had served British colonial territories across the region. The WACB had denominated everything in pounds sterling; this series retained that framework for practical continuity, even as the country was building entirely new monetary institutions from scratch. De La Rue printed the series under the new Bank of Ghana's authority — the bank itself had only been established by statute in 1957, the same year independence was declared.
The P#1 designation confirms this as the lowest denomination of Ghana's inaugural issue. Signatures of J.E. Doe and A. Eggleston represent the Bank Secretary and a senior official respectively — the pairing is specific to this early transitional period before the series was retired following the 1965 decimalization and introduction of the cedi.
