| Obverse description | The national arms of the Somali Democratic Republic occupy the central field, depicting a shield bearing a five-pointed star, flanked by two leopards rampant serving as supporters, with a ribbon below. The outer legend in Latin reads JAMHUURIYADDA DIMOQRAADIGA SOOMAALIYA along the upper periphery, with the Arabic equivalent along the inner ring. The commemorative dates 1969–1979 appear in both Arabic-Indic and Western numerals below the arms, flanked by the Arabic legend for 'Tenth Anniversary of the Revolution' and the Somali inscription SANNAD GUURADII 10AAD EE KAGAANKA along the lower periphery. |

| Additional information |
Somalia declared itself a republic in 1960 following the merger of the former Italian Trust Territory and British Somaliland. By 1969, Siad Barre's military coup had reoriented the state toward scientific socialism and Soviet alignment — making the 1979 anniversary issue a product of that ideological moment, struck just as Soviet support was beginning to fracture following the Ogaden War with Ethiopia.
