Provincial food stamps (粮票) were not currency but state-rationed entitlements — this one authorized the bearer to purchase ten shi jin of grain within Jilin Province's distribution network. Issued under the planned economy's household registration system, they were non-transferable in principle, though informal trading was widespread and quietly tolerated by local cadres throughout the 1970s.
The regional restriction matters: Jilin-issue stamps were worthless the moment a traveler crossed into Heilongjiang or Liaoning, which created genuine hardship for anyone moving between provinces without a separate allocation of national-issue stamps (全国粮票), which were both scarcer and more jealously guarded.
The ration system was formally abolished in 1993, after which most provincial stamps were pulped or discarded — survival rates for 1975 Jilin issues are accordingly low.
