Food rationing stamps (liangpiao) were a fixture of Chinese daily life from 1955 until the system was formally abolished in 1993. Provincial stamps like this one were non-negotiable outside their issuing province — a deliberate administrative control that restricted population movement as much as it managed grain supply. Hubei's stamps from the mid-1970s were issued under the Revolutionary Committee structure that replaced conventional government organs during the Cultural Revolution, making the issuing authority itself a product of a specific and short-lived political arrangement.
The "shi jin" unit equals half a kilogram. Ten shi jin was a meaningful monthly allocation, not a trivial ration.
