Issued as part of Israel's annual Independence Day commemorative series, the 1981 issue marked the country's 33rd anniversary — the year corresponding in Hebrew gematria to the word "לג" (lag), lending it minor cultural resonance but no particular political urgency. The People of the Book theme drew on a phrase long associated with Jewish identity in Islamic jurisprudence, repurposed here as national self-definition.
KM#113 was struck in a limited proof edition, as with all issues in this gold series. Mintages were modest and largely absorbed by collectors at issue price rather than entering any secondary circulation.
