Samoa's 2011 coinage reform replaced the old copper-nickel alloy with nickel-plated steel across the small denomination series, a cost-driven decision that coincided with global metal price pressures affecting Pacific island mints throughout that period. The changeover also saw rim and planchet adjustments to reduce production costs negotiated through the Royal Australian Mint, which has struck Samoan coinage under contract for decades.
