Brunei's 1984 independence from Britain came after nearly a century of British protection — a status the sultanate had actively chosen to maintain, twice refusing incorporation into Malaysia. The Currency and Monetary Board, established at independence, issued commemorative and circulation coinage bearing Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah's effigy as a direct assertion of the new sovereign monetary order. The 1994 date places this piece a decade into that arrangement, by which point the series had settled into unremarkable annual production.
