Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Hassanal Bolkiah's accession in 1967, these coins circulated alongside a broader commemorative program released by Brunei's monetary authority for the Golden Jubilee. Bolkiah holds the distinction of being one of the longest-reigning current monarchs in the world, and the jubilee series was among the more extensive coinage overhauls Brunei undertook in the 2010s, introducing a third portrait update to reflect his age.
