Additional information

Victor Amadeus I ruled Savoy for just nine years before dying in 1637, leaving his duchy perpetually squeezed between French ambition and Spanish Milan. These large gold multiple scudi issues were not pocket change — they functioned as diplomatic and mercantile instruments, the kind of coin that settled debts between courts rather than between merchants. Production across 1633–1636 coincided with Savoy's tense maneuvering during the Thirty Years' War, during which Victor Amadeus shifted alliances with uncomfortable frequency, ultimately landing in the French orbit through the Treaty of Rivoli.

At 33 grams, pieces of this type saw limited handling, which is why genuine wear is typically confined to the highest relief.
