Manuel Pinto de Fonseca served as Grand Master of the Order from 1741 until his death in 1773 — an unusually long tenure that coincided with the Order's increasingly precarious hold on Malta as Ottoman pressure eased but European political interference intensified. His administration was marked by substantial building projects on the island and a determined effort to maintain the Order's financial credibility, which makes the gold coinage of this period a direct instrument of institutional prestige rather than mere fiscal necessity.
The .840 fineness is slightly below the standard of contemporary European gold, a deliberate adjustment the Order had used across several reigns to stretch bullion reserves.
