| Obverse description | Left-facing bust of Pope Gregory XVI wearing the zucchetto (skullcap) and richly embroidered papal cope adorned with foliate and cross motifs, rendered in high relief with exceptional detail. The effigy is engraved in a neoclassical style by Niccolò Cerbara, whose initials N.C. appear in the lower right field. The circumferential legend reads GREGORIVS·XVI·PON·MAX·AN·V, denoting the pontifical year, separated by raised dots. The entire design is contained within an inner circle bordered by a fine toothed rim. |
