The Banca Nazionale Somala was established in 1960, the year Somalia gained independence through the merger of the former Italian Trust Territory and British Somaliland. Officina Carte Valori — the Italian state security printing works in Rome — supplied the early note series, a direct consequence of Italy's continued administrative and economic involvement in the south long after formal decolonization.
P#10 is the last dated issue before the 1969 coup that brought Siad Barre to power, after which the central bank was restructured and the note series replaced.
