P#R2 is a regional issue, not a standard Bank Indonesia circulating note. The "R" prefix in the Pick catalogue denotes the Regional Series — notes intended specifically for circulation in Irian Barat (West New Guinea) following its administrative transfer from the Dutch to Indonesia in 1963. A distinct currency series was considered necessary to manage the monetary transition in a territory that had been operating under the Dutch-administered Nieuw-Guinea gulden.
The Cotton paper composition distinguishes these from later polymer experiments, though the regional notes were withdrawn relatively quickly once monetary unification was deemed stable enough to proceed.
