Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of Indian independence, this was part of a broader commemorative program the Reserve Bank ran through the 1970s. The .500 silver content reflects a compromise already in decline — India had moved away from higher-purity silver coinage years earlier, and this series would be among the last to use silver at all before the commemorative program shifted entirely to base metal.
