Sri Lanka shifted to stainless steel for its higher-denomination circulating coinage in 2013 partly in response to the chronic problem of coins being melted for scrap — a recurring issue across South Asia when base metal values approach or exceed face value. AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel is magnetic, which aided vending machine and transit system compatibility during the island's ongoing infrastructure modernization.
Anuradhapura, the ancient capital that gives this coin its series name, served as the political and religious center of Sri Lanka for over a millennium before its abandonment following the Chola invasions of the 10th century.
